January 2010 Update
So it's the dawn of a new year.
In the depths of these dim and quiet winter days
and long black nights, I feel something wanting to be born. Although
nature entices me to sleep
sleep sleep…..
I ignore her beckoning and sit at the piano with
my guitar close by and work work work. The light may be dim, but I can
still see the vision clearly of what I need to do.
Last week a music publisher asked me to explain how I got inspired to write songs like Lean Into Me. It took me poking at this question for over five hours to give a paragraph that captured the essence of what my work is all about. Here's what I finally told him:
My inspiration as a song writer comes from just paying attention to the moments of life as they unfold. Mundane or magic, I find material to work with everywhere, all the time. The poignancy of any message actually comes from the listeners as they relate to the same things that I do from their unique perspectives. It's our mutual understanding and the strength of our connection and oneness that makes it powerful.
It sounded better than saying that my inspiration comes from everywhere and nowhere at the same time. The truth is that everything creative comes from nothing but nothing is not empty. Nothing is the potential for anything and everything waiting for an invitation. I sent out my invitations and the responses are coming in. It is my intention to make the next CD all original work. Of course, I'll have lots of help putting it all together, but it will be a brand new message of oneness and connection to further bring healing to the planet. The message will be easy to understand and will seek to inspire loving action.
There. My intention is stated. And we know that the universe is working with me to make it all happen exactly as it should. Just like it did last year for Simple Gifts. And before that on Perfect Mystery. And before that…..

Now you sorta know how I do what I do. Mostly, I just get out of the way and ask the light to shine as it will to do what needs to get done through me and hope for the best.
